About this xml sitemap generator

This sitemap generator turns a list of URLs into a valid XML sitemap you can upload and submit to Google and Bing. Paste the URLs, pick optional lastmod, changefreq and priority values, and download sitemap.xml, or a ZIP of several files plus a sitemap index for big sites.

It works from the list you give it and does not crawl your site. That is often the point: crawlers can't reach staging sites, pages behind a login or sites that block bots. Export the URLs from your CMS or analytics, paste them in, and you get a clean file in a second.

Every line is checked. Relative paths, broken addresses and duplicates are reported instead of slipping into the file, and nothing you paste leaves your browser.

Features

  • Validation you can read

Each skipped line is listed with its line number and the reason, such as a relative path or a malformed address. Duplicates are removed and counted, and #fragments are stripped with a note.

  • Values per URL or for all

Set lastmod, changefreq and priority once for every URL, or write them after a single URL like https://example.com/blog/ | 2026-10-28 | daily. Values on the line win over the defaults.

  • Automatic splitting with an index

When a file would pass 50,000 URLs or 50 MB, the list is split into sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml and so on, with a sitemap_index.xml that points to each one. Everything downloads as one ZIP.

  • Image sitemap entries

Add image URLs after a page URL and they are written as image:image entries in Google's image namespace, up to 1,000 per page. Turn the option off and the namespace disappears too.

  • Correct XML escaping

Ampersands, quotes and angle brackets are escaped, and non-ASCII paths are percent-encoded, so a URL like /café-menu?size=large&color=blue can't break the file.

  • Reads old sitemaps and HTML

Paste an existing sitemap and every <loc> is pulled out, or paste a page's HTML to extract its absolute links.

How to use the xml sitemap generator

  1. 1Paste your URLs, one per line, or open a text file.
  2. 2Set lastmod, changefreq and priority defaults or add them per URL.
  3. 3Download sitemap.xml, or a ZIP with a sitemap index for big lists.

When to use it

  • Static and custom-built sites

Sites built with a static generator or a hand-rolled framework often have no sitemap plugin. Paste the route list and upload the result to the site root.

  • Site migrations

Before a domain or URL change, build a sitemap of the new URLs so search engines find them quickly, and keep the old one live for a while so redirects get crawled.

  • Large catalogs

A shop with 180,000 product URLs needs four sitemap files and an index. The tool does the split and the index in one step.

What is an XML sitemap and do you need one?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the URLs you want search engines to find, written in the format defined by the sitemaps.org protocol 0.9. Each URL sits in a <url> element with a required <loc> and three optional tags: <lastmod>, <changefreq> and <priority>.

A sitemap helps discovery. It doesn't improve rankings on its own. Small sites with good internal links are usually found without one, but a sitemap still helps new sites with few backlinks, large sites, sites with pages that few links point to, and sites that change often. Once it is live, add a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt. The robots.txt generator does that for you.

How big can a sitemap be?

One sitemap file may hold at most 50,000 URLs and be at most 50 MB uncompressed. Past either limit you split the list into several files and list those files in a sitemap index. An index can point to up to 50,000 sitemaps, which covers 2.5 billion URLs.

You submit only the index in Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools. This tool counts bytes as it writes, so very long URLs trigger a split by size, not only by count.

Does Google use lastmod, changefreq and priority?

Google uses lastmod when it is consistently accurate and ignores changefreq and priority. That is stated in Google's own sitemap documentation. Bing has also said that lastmod is the tag it relies on most.

So the honest advice is simple. Set lastmod to the real date the main content last changed, written in W3C Datetime format such as 2026-10-28 or 2026-10-28T14:30:00+00:00. Don't set every page to today's date on every build. Search engines notice dates that change without real edits and start to ignore them. Leave changefreq and priority out unless another engine you care about reads them.

Which URLs should go in a sitemap?

List the canonical, indexable version of every page you want in search results, and nothing else. A few checks before you paste:

  • Use full absolute URLs with the same protocol and host your site really uses, for example https://www.example.com/ and not http://example.com/.
  • Leave out URLs that redirect, return 404, carry a noindex tag or point their canonical tag somewhere else.
  • Pick one version of each page. Tracking parameters like ?utm_source= create duplicates.
  • Keep each sitemap to one host. Mixing hosts needs every host verified in Search Console, so the tool warns you.

Why use Mavros

Tips

  • Clean a messy export first with a duplicate line remover, then paste the result here. The tool also dedupes, but a clean list is easier to review.
  • If a URL has spaces or odd characters, check its encoded form with the URL encoder before you publish the page.
  • Upload sitemap.xml to your site root so it is served at https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, then submit that address in Search Console.
  • For split output, upload every file from the ZIP to the folder you typed as the base URL, then submit sitemap_index.xml only.
  • Pages missing from your sitemap often also lack good titles. Set those with the meta tag generator while you are at it.

Questions

How do I create an XML sitemap for free?

Paste your page URLs here, one per line, choose any defaults, and download sitemap.xml. Then upload it to your site root and submit its address in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Why doesn't this tool crawl my website?

Crawling would mean sending requests to your site from our side, which this browser-only tool never does. Working from a list also covers staging sites and logged-in pages that crawlers can't reach, and it has no page cap.

How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. For more, this tool splits the list into several files and writes a sitemap index that links to them, so you submit one address.

Should I set priority and changefreq?

Usually not. Google ignores both tags. Leave them out unless a search engine you target reads them, and spend the effort on an accurate lastmod instead.

What date format does lastmod use?

W3C Datetime, a profile of ISO 8601. A date like 2026-10-28 is enough. You can add a time with a zone, like 2026-10-28T14:30:00+00:00. Impossible dates such as February 30 are ignored by this tool.

Why were some of my URLs skipped?

A sitemap needs full URLs, so relative paths like /about, typos and non-web addresses are skipped. Each skipped line is listed with its number and reason, so you can fix it and paste again.

How do I add images to a sitemap?

Write the image URLs on the same line after the page URL, separated by | or spaces. They are added as image:image entries, up to 1,000 per page, in Google's image sitemap format.
