About this word cloud generator

This word cloud generator turns any text into a picture where the most frequent words are the biggest. Paste an article, survey answers, a speech or your own list of words with counts, pick a shape and colours, and download a PNG or SVG. There is no sign-up and no watermark.

Common filler words like the, and and of are left out automatically, with lists for English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese. Click any word in the Top words list to drop it too. Shapes include a circle, heart, star and cloud, or you can use any black-on-white image as the outline.

Your text is counted and laid out in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so it is safe for internal feedback or unpublished writing.

Features

  • Paste text or a word list

Paste free text, drop a .txt or .csv file, or switch to Words with counts and enter lines like coffee, 40. That suits survey tallies, tag exports and keyword reports.

  • Stop words you control

Tick the languages to filter, add your own words to leave out, set the shortest word length and choose whether Coffee and coffee count as one. Excluded words can be brought back with one click.

  • Shapes, including your own

Rectangle, circle, heart, star, cloud, diamond or triangle. Or drop a silhouette image, such as a logo or an animal outline, and the words fill its dark parts.

  • Colours, fonts and direction

Seven colour themes, a theme, transparent or custom background, five font styles with an optional bold, and four word directions from all across to any angle.

  • Fair sizing

Choose linear, square-root or log scaling, set the biggest word size and the spacing between words. Square root is the default, so the top word stands out without crushing the rest.

  • PNG, transparent PNG and SVG

Download a PNG at up to 1600 × 900 pixels, a PNG with no background for slides, or an SVG that stays sharp at any size and can be edited in a vector app.

How to use the word cloud generator

  1. 1Paste your text, drop a .txt file, or enter words with counts.
  2. 2Choose a shape, colours, font and word direction.
  3. 3Download a PNG, a transparent PNG or an SVG.

When to use it

  • Summing up survey answers

Paste every reply to an open question and see the themes at a glance. Then check the exact numbers in the Top words list, or run the text through the word counter for totals.

  • Classroom activities

Paste a chapter of a novel to see its themes, or collect one word from each student about a topic. A heart or star shape makes a nice poster.

  • Presentations and reports

Use a transparent PNG on a title slide, or an SVG in a report so it prints crisply. Keep it to 40 to 80 words so people can read them.

  • Checking what a page is about

Paste your page copy and see which words dominate. If the cloud doesn't show your main topic, the page probably doesn't either. The keyword density checker gives the exact percentages.

How does a word cloud generator work?

First the text is split into words and each word is counted. Words on the stop list, short words and numbers are dropped, depending on your settings. The top words are kept, up to the number you choose.

Then each word gets a font size based on its count, and a layout engine places the words one by one, biggest first. It starts in the middle and spirals outward until it finds a spot where the word doesn't overlap anything placed before. This tool uses wordcloud2.js, an open-source layout library under the MIT licence.

For shapes, the area outside the outline is marked as taken before layout starts, so words can only land inside.

What are stop words, and should I remove them?

Stop words are the small words that hold sentences together: the, of, and, to, is, it. In English they make up a large share of any text, so without filtering they would be the biggest words in every cloud. That tells you nothing.

Remove them almost always. Add your own on top: a company name that appears everywhere, or words from the question itself, like product in a product survey. Keep them only when the small words are the point, for example when comparing writing styles.

Linear, square root or log: which size scale?

Linear scaling grows the size in step with the count. A word used 40 times towers over one used 4 times, a few words take over, and the rest end up tiny. Square root grows more slowly, so ten times the count gives only about three times the step up in size. Log scaling flattens it further, which suits word lists where one count is huge.

If words go missing with a note that they didn't fit, lower the biggest word size, pick a wider canvas or reduce the number of words.

Tips

  • Clean pasted text first. Repeated headers, footers and signatures inflate their words; the remove duplicate lines tool strips repeated lines quickly.
  • Click Shuffle layout for a new arrangement with the same words, sizes and colours.
  • Dark themes look good on screens but use a lot of ink when printed. Pick a light theme for handouts.
  • Silhouettes work best when they are bold and simple, with thick parts. Thin lines leave too little room for words.
  • SVG files use common system fonts like Arial and Georgia, so they look the same on most computers without embedding anything.

Questions

How do I make a word cloud in a shape?

Pick a shape from the Shape list, such as heart, star or cloud. For a custom shape, choose From an image and drop a silhouette. Dark, solid areas of the image become the space the words fill.

How do I remove words from the word cloud?

Click the word in the Top words list below the cloud, or type it in the Also leave out box. Common words are removed by the stop-word lists, which you can switch on or off per language.

Can I make a word cloud from a list with my own counts?

Yes. Choose Words with counts and enter one word per line followed by its count, such as coffee, 40. Tabs, semicolons and colons work as separators, so you can paste from a spreadsheet.

Can I download the word cloud as SVG?

Yes. The SVG button saves a vector file with every word at its exact position, size, angle and colour. It opens in browsers, Inkscape, Illustrator and Figma.

How are word sizes decided?

Each word's size follows how often it appears, between a minimum and the biggest word size you set. You choose how strongly counts affect size with linear, square-root or log scaling.

Why are some of my words missing from the cloud?

They didn't fit. The status line tells you how many. Lower the biggest word size, reduce the spacing, pick a wider canvas, or use fewer words.

Does it work with languages other than English?

Yes. Words are split using Unicode letter rules, so accented letters and non-Latin scripts count correctly. Stop-word lists cover English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese, and you can add your own for any language.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting and layout run in your browser, and image shapes are read locally. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can use private survey data.
