Grade Calculator
Weighted course grade, final exam target and points to letter. Runs in your browser.
About this grade calculator
This grade calculator tells you your current course grade from weighted assignments, the score you need on the final to reach a target, and the percent and letter for any test. It is built for students checking where they stand and for teachers who want a quick grading chart.
There are three modes on one page. Weighted grade takes your homework, quizzes, midterm and project with their weights. Final exam needed solves for the one score that matters most in finals week. Points to grade turns 43 out of 50, or 6 wrong out of 40, into a percent and a letter.
The letter scale is editable. It starts on the common US scale with plus and minus grades, and you can switch to a simple A to F scale, the Bangladesh UGC scale, UK degree classes, or type your own cut-offs.
Features
Scores as percents or points
Type 88 for a percent or 45/50 for points in any row. Rows without a score count as work still to come, so the calculator knows how much of the course is left.
Needed average for every letter
With ungraded work left, a table shows the average you need on the rest of the course for each letter, marked Already secured or Above 100% where that applies.
Final exam solver with a what-if
Enter your current grade, the final's weight and your goal. You get the score needed, your grade if you score 0 or 100, and the grade for any score you try.
Chart of grade versus final score
A straight-line chart shows your course grade for every possible final score, with the letter cut-offs drawn across it, so you can see the margins at a glance.
Teacher grading chart
In Points to grade, a table lists every number wrong with its percent and letter, up to 200 questions or points. Your current row is highlighted.
Editable letter scale
Change any cut-off, add or remove letters, or pick a preset. Every result on the page uses the scale you set.
How to use the grade calculator
- 1Pick a mode: weighted grade, final exam needed, or points to grade.
- 2Enter your scores and weights, or your current grade and the final's weight.
- 3Read your grade and letter, then check what you need for each letter.
When to use it
The week before finals
A student at 84% with a final worth 30% learns that 87.33% on the final gives an 85% in the course, and that even a perfect final can't reach 90%.
Midway through a term
Enter what has been graded so far and leave the final blank. The current grade only counts the graded weight, so a strong start isn't diluted by work that hasn't happened yet.
Marking a stack of quizzes
Set 25 questions in Questions wrong mode and keep the grading chart open. Each paper is a glance: 3 wrong is 88%, a B+.
Checking a semester GPA next
Once each course has a letter, carry them into the GPA and CGPA calculator to see the term average.
How do you calculate a weighted grade?
A weighted grade is a weighted average. Multiply each score by its weight, add those products, and divide by the sum of the weights you used. The weights don't have to add to 100. The division takes care of that.
Take the example the tool opens with: homework 92% (worth 20%), quizzes 85% (15%), midterm 78% (25%) and a project scored 45/50, which is 90% (10%). The products are 1,840 + 1,275 + 1,950 + 900 = 5,965. Divide by the 70% graded so far and the current grade is 85.21%, a B.
A common mistake is dividing by 100 when only 70% of the course has been graded. That would give 59.65%, which looks like a failing grade but only means the final hasn't happened.
What do I need on my final to get the grade I want?
Use: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. Your current grade already counts for (1 − w) of the course, and the final fills the rest.
With a current grade of 84%, a final worth 25% and a target of 80%: (80 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (80 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 68%. A result above 100% means the target is out of reach on the final alone. A result of 0 or less means the target is already safe.
This formula assumes your current grade covers everything except the final. If a lab report or project is also still out, use the Weighted grade mode and leave each ungraded item blank.
How do points-based courses work?
Some syllabi use points instead of percents: 1,000 points in the course, with 300 for exams and 150 for homework. Enter each item's score as earned/possible, like 132/150, and use its points as the weight. The weighted average then equals total points earned divided by total points possible.
What letter grade is an 85?
On the common US plus and minus scale an 85 is a B. Grading scales are set by schools and instructors, so always check your syllabus. These are the defaults this tool uses:
- A+ 97 and up, A 93, A− 90
- B+ 87, B 83, B− 80
- C+ 77, C 73, C− 70
- D+ 67, D 63, D− 60, F below 60
- Simple scale: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60, F below 60

Tips
- Check whether your instructor rounds. An 89.5 becomes an A− in some classes and stays a B+ in others, and the calculator does not round for you.
- Dropped lowest quiz? Leave that quiz out before you enter the category average.
- Extra credit can push a score above 100%. Type it as it is, such as 105 or 21/20, and the maths still works.
- If you only know the percent change you need, the percentage calculator handles quick what-if sums.
- Counting down to exam day? The date difference calculator shows how many study days are left, and a Pomodoro timer keeps each session short and focused.
Questions
How do I calculate my grade with weights?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight of the graded items. Enter each item above and the calculator shows the same sum with your numbers.
What grade do I need on my final to pass?
Set your target to the passing mark, often 60% or 70%, and use Final exam needed. The answer is (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, with w as the final's weight in decimal form.
What if the score I need is over 100%?
Then the target can't be reached through the final alone. The calculator shows the best grade you could finish with if you score 100%. Ask about extra credit or a curve before giving up.
Do my weights have to add up to 100?
No. The average divides by the total weight you entered, so points-based courses work too. If your syllabus uses percents and the total isn't 100, check for a missing category.
How do I turn points into a percentage?
Divide the points earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. 43 out of 50 is 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%, which is a B on the default scale.
How is a test grade worked out from the number wrong?
Subtract the number wrong from the total, divide by the total, and multiply by 100. With 40 questions and 6 wrong, that is 34 ÷ 40 × 100 = 85%.
Can I change the grading scale?
Yes. Open Grade scale, choose a preset or edit any letter and cut-off. Every result on the page, including the needed-score tables, updates to match.
