About this zakat calculator

This zakat calculator adds up your zakatable wealth, takes away debts due now, and checks the total against the nisab. If you are at or above the nisab, it shows the 2.5% zakat due and the full working.

You enter today's gold and silver prices yourself, per gram, tola (bhori) or troy ounce, and for 24K, 22K, 21K or 18K gold. Nothing is fetched from the internet, so the result always uses the rate you trust, in your own currency.

Zakat is an act of worship, and scholars differ on some details. The calculator follows the widely used rules and says where opinions differ. For your own case, please ask a scholar you trust.

Features

  • Gold or silver nisab

Choose the gold nisab of 87.48 g (7.5 tola) or the silver nisab of 612.36 g (52.5 tola). The nisab value updates from your price.

  • Gold by weight and karat

Add each piece of jewellery or coin with its weight and karat. Gold is valued by its pure content, so 10 g of 22K counts as 9.17 g of pure gold.

  • Prices in any unit

Enter a gold price for any karat per gram, tola or troy ounce. It is converted to the price of pure gold per gram for you.

  • All main asset types

Cash, bank balances, gold, silver, investments and shares, money owed to you, business stock and other savings.

  • Debts due now

Personal and business amounts due now are deducted before the nisab check.

  • Clear answer and breakdown

A plain "Zakat is due" or "Below the nisab", the amount, each line of the working, and a button to copy it all.

How to use the zakat calculator

  1. 1Enter today's gold and silver prices and pick a gold or silver nisab.
  2. 2Add your cash, gold, silver, investments and stock, and debts due now.
  3. 3See whether zakat is due and the 2.5% amount, with a full breakdown.

When to use it

  • Yearly zakat date

Many people calculate on the same Hijri date each year, often in Ramadan. Note the date, and the date difference calculator will tell you how many days of the next hawl have passed.

  • Family gold

Weigh each piece in tola or grams, set its karat, and see its value at today's price.

  • Small business owners

Add stock at its sale value and cash in the till, then deduct supplier bills due now.

  • Checking a charity's figure

Compare your total with a mosque or charity calculation and see which line differs.

How is zakat calculated?

Add up the zakatable wealth you own, subtract debts that are due now, and compare the result with the nisab. If the net amount is at or above the nisab and you have held wealth above it for one lunar year (the hawl), zakat is 2.5% of the whole net amount.

Note that 2.5% applies to all of it, not only the part above the nisab. Say your net zakatable wealth is 14,500 and the silver nisab is 857.30. Zakat due is 14,500 × 2.5% = 362.50.

What is the nisab in grams and tola?

The nisab comes from the hadith: 20 mithqal of gold and 200 dirhams of silver. In today's units that is 87.48 g of gold and 612.36 g of silver. One tola, also called a bhori or vori in Bangladesh, is 11.664 g, which makes 7.5 tola of gold and 52.5 tola of silver.

Some sources round to 85 g of gold and 595 g of silver. The difference is small, but this calculator uses 87.48 g and 612.36 g, the figures most South Asian scholars and many charities use.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Silver is far cheaper than gold, so the silver nisab is a much lower threshold. At 120 per gram of pure gold and 1.40 per gram of silver, the gold nisab is about 10,498 and the silver nisab about 857.

Many scholars and charities advise the silver nisab when wealth is mixed (cash, savings and goods), because it is more cautious and benefits more people in need. Others use gold, especially for wealth held only in gold. Both are recognised views, so follow the guidance of a scholar you trust.

What counts as zakatable wealth?

These are the asset types most scholars agree on. Your home, car, furniture and personal clothes are not counted.

  • Cash at home and money in bank accounts
  • Gold and silver in any form (jewellery for personal use is debated; see the FAQ)
  • Shares and funds, at least the zakatable part of their market value
  • Money lent to others that you expect to get back
  • Business stock held for sale, at today's sale value
  • Other savings, such as foreign currency or crypto held as savings

Tips

  • Use a price from a local jeweller or gold association on the day you calculate. Gold prices can move several percent in a week.
  • If your price is in troy ounces, pick "per troy ounce" rather than converting by hand. One troy ounce is 31.103 g, which the unit converter can confirm.
  • For a mortgage or long loan, many scholars deduct only the installments due soon, not the whole balance.
  • Not sure of the Hijri date your hawl started? The calendar converter turns Gregorian dates into Hijri ones.
  • Keep the copied breakdown with your records. Next year you can compare it line by line.

Questions

What is the nisab for zakat?

The nisab is the value of 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver, the minimum wealth on which zakat is due. Its money value changes with metal prices, so work it out from today's rate.

How much zakat do I have to pay?

Zakat is 2.5% of your total net zakatable wealth once it reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed. On net wealth of 20,000, that is 500.

Is zakat 2.5% of everything or only the amount above the nisab?

It is 2.5% of the whole net amount, not just the part above the nisab. The nisab only decides whether zakat is due at all.

How do I calculate zakat on gold jewellery?

Weigh it, find its pure gold content by karat (22K is 22/24 pure), and multiply by today's price for pure gold. Add it to your other wealth, then apply 2.5% if the total reaches the nisab.

Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?

Scholars differ on this. The Hanafi school says zakat is due on all gold and silver, including jewellery worn regularly, while many Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars exempt jewellery for normal personal use. Follow your scholar's guidance.

How many grams is one tola or bhori?

One tola, called a bhori or vori in Bangladesh, is 11.664 g. So the gold nisab is 7.5 tola and the silver nisab is 52.5 tola.

Can I deduct my debts before paying zakat?

Yes, debts due now can be deducted, such as bills, rent or installments due soon. For long-term loans, many scholars allow only the payments due in the near term, not the full balance.

What is hawl?

Hawl is one full lunar year, about 354 days, that your wealth must stay at or above the nisab before zakat is due. Most people pick one fixed Hijri date each year to calculate.

Does this calculator replace a scholar's advice?

No. It applies widely used rules to the numbers you enter. For pensions, business shares, mixed-use property or other complex cases, please consult a qualified scholar.
