Business Days Calculator
Count working days between dates, or add working days to a date. Runs in your browser.
About this business days calculator
This business days calculator counts the working days between two dates, or finds the date that is a set number of working days away. It skips weekends, public holidays and any extra days off you add, which makes it useful for deadlines, notice periods, delivery estimates and payroll.
Pick your weekend (Saturday and Sunday, Friday and Saturday, or any custom days), choose US federal holidays or UK bank holidays, and add your own closures. You get the total, a list of every holiday that was skipped, and a month-by-month table you can check against a calendar.
For plain calendar maths such as years, months and days between dates, use the date difference calculator instead.
Features
Two modes
Count working days between a start and end date, or add and subtract working days from a date. Adding works like Excel's WORKDAY: the start date itself is not counted.
Holidays worked out from the rules
US federal holidays follow 5 U.S.C. 6103, with Saturday holidays moved to Friday and Sunday ones to Monday. UK bank holidays for England and Wales use the standing rules, including Easter and substitute days. Both work for any year, not just a stored list.
Any weekend
Choose Saturday and Sunday, Friday and Saturday (common in Bangladesh and much of the Middle East), Friday only, Sunday only or no weekend at all. You can also toggle single days for a four-day or six-day week.
Your own days off
Paste dates such as 2026-12-24 Office closed, one per line. Names are kept and shown in the list of skipped days. A day that is both a weekend and a holiday is counted once.
Month-by-month breakdown
Longer ranges show a table of working days, weekend days and holidays per month, plus working hours at your chosen hours per day and the total in five-day work weeks.
Start and end date control
Count both ends (like NETWORKDAYS), only the days after the start, or neither. The current dates and holiday set are kept in the page address, so a link reopens the same calculation.
How to use the business days calculator
- 1Choose Count working days or Add / subtract working days, then set the dates.
- 2Pick your weekend days, a public holiday set and any extra days off.
- 3Read the working day total, the holidays skipped and the month-by-month table.
When to use it
Contract and notice deadlines
A contract says 10 business days from receipt. Switch to Add mode, enter the receipt date and 10, and read the due date with holidays already skipped.
Shipping and delivery estimates
A courier quotes 3 to 5 business days. Add 5 working days to the order date to see the latest likely delivery day.
Payroll and leave
Count the working days in a month to prorate a salary, or count the days in a leave request so weekends and holidays aren't charged. Then turn the hours into pay with the salary calculator.
Project planning
Find how many working days remain before a launch, then print a printable calendar for the wall and mark the milestones by hand.
How do you calculate business days between two dates?
Count every calendar day in the range, then remove the weekend days and any holidays that fall on weekdays. The calculator walks through each date, so leap years, month lengths and long ranges are exact.
Example: January 2026 has 31 days. With Saturday and Sunday off there are 22 weekdays. New Year's Day (Thursday 1 January) and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday 19 January) are US federal holidays, which leaves 20 working days.
Is the start date counted?
It depends on what you're measuring, and this is where most calculators disagree. Excel's NETWORKDAYS counts both the start and the end date. Many notice periods and legal deadlines count from the day after an event, which means leaving the start out.
When adding days the convention is fixed: the start date is day zero. Adding 1 working day to a Friday gives the following Monday, and adding 0 returns the start date unchanged.
Which US federal holidays are included?
The eleven holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year's Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. (third Monday of January), Washington's Birthday (third Monday of February), Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Juneteenth (19 June, from 2021), Independence Day, Labor Day (first Monday of September), Columbus Day (second Monday of October), Veterans Day, Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) and Christmas Day.
When a fixed-date holiday lands on a Saturday, federal offices close on the Friday before. On a Sunday they close the Monday after. That is why New Year's Day 2022 was observed on Friday 31 December 2021, and the calculator handles that crossover. Inauguration Day, state holidays and bank-only closures are not included, so add them as your own days off if they apply.
How are UK bank holidays worked out?
England and Wales have eight standard bank holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May bank holiday (first Monday of May), the spring bank holiday (last Monday of May), the summer bank holiday (last Monday of August), Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Easter is calculated with the standard Gregorian algorithm.
If Christmas or Boxing Day falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday is given. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different lists, and one-off extra days announced for royal events are not predictable from rules, so add those yourself.

Tips
- Check whether your deadline counts from the event day or the day after. It changes the answer by one.
- For Friday and Saturday weekends, also check whether your organisation treats Friday as a half day.
- Paste a whole year of company closures once, then bookmark the page. The link keeps the dates and holiday set, but not your custom list, so keep that list in a note.
- Business days are not the same as banking days. Banks may also close on days that aren't public holidays.
Questions
How many business days are in a year?
A year has 260 to 262 weekdays, depending on which day it starts on and whether it is a leap year. Subtract public holidays to get working days: with the 11 US federal holidays that is about 250, and with 8 UK bank holidays about 252 or 253.
Do business days include Saturday?
Not in most countries. Business days are normally Monday to Friday. Where the weekend is Friday and Saturday, business days run Sunday to Thursday. Set the weekend to match your country.
How do I add business days to a date?
Choose Add / subtract working days, enter the start date and the number of days. The tool steps forward, skipping weekends and holidays, and shows the resulting date and what it skipped.
Is this the same as Excel's NETWORKDAYS?
Yes, when both Count the start date and Count the end date are ticked, which is the default. Add mode matches WORKDAY. Custom weekends match NETWORKDAYS.INTL.
What if a holiday falls on a weekend?
It is counted once, as a weekend day. US federal and UK presets already include the weekday that is observed instead, such as the Friday before a Saturday holiday.
Does it include holidays for my country?
Built-in sets cover US federal holidays and England and Wales bank holidays. For any other country, choose No public holidays and paste your official dates as your own days off.
Can I count backwards?
Yes. In Add mode, enter a negative number such as -10 to find the date 10 working days before. In Count mode, an end date before the start is counted the same way and flagged.
