About this image cropper

This image cropper cuts a photo down to the part you want, in any shape or exact pixel size, right in your browser. Use it for profile pictures, product shots, thumbnails and social posts.

You drag a box over the picture or type the numbers. Lock a ratio such as 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, or pick a social size and the output width is filled in for you. You can also rotate, flip and straighten a crooked horizon before you cut.

Nothing is uploaded. The photo is read and cropped on your own device, phone pictures are turned upright first, and there is no watermark or sign-up.

Features

  • Drag, resize or draw

Move the box from its middle, pull any of the eight handles, or drag on the image to draw a new box. Mouse, pen and touch all work.

  • Exact pixel control

Type X, Y, width and height in pixels. Arrow keys nudge the box by 1 px, Shift moves 10 px, and Ctrl or Alt with an arrow resizes it.

  • Ratios and social sizes

Free, 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 9:16 and their portrait versions, plus presets such as Instagram 1080×1350, Story 1080×1920 and YouTube 1280×720.

  • Straighten with auto-zoom

Tilt the photo up to 45° either way in half-degree steps. The image is enlarged just enough that no empty corners appear, or you can switch that off.

  • Circle crop

Cut a round or oval shape with transparent corners. If JPG is selected, the file is saved as PNG so the corners stay clear.

  • Format, quality and size

Save as JPG, PNG or WebP (AVIF where your browser supports it), set the quality, and optionally scale the result to a set width.

How to use the image cropper

  1. 1Drop, browse or paste an image. A tilted sample opens by default.
  2. 2Pick a ratio or social size, then drag the box, type exact pixels, or rotate and straighten.
  3. 3Choose the format and quality and download the cropped image.

When to use it

  • Profile pictures

Pick 1:1 and tick Circle crop for a round avatar on a transparent background.

  • Instagram and Stories

Feed posts look best at 4:5, which is 1080×1350. Stories and Reels are 9:16. The presets set both the shape and the final size.

  • Video thumbnails and banners

Cut a 16:9 frame from a wide photo for a 1280×720 thumbnail, or a thin strip for a LinkedIn banner at 1584×396.

  • Screenshots

Trim a screenshot to one dialog or chart before pasting it into a bug report. Typed pixel values make repeat crops match.

Does cropping an image reduce quality?

Cropping removes pixels from the edges. It does not blur the ones you keep. A 4032×3024 phone photo (12 MP) cropped to a square becomes 3024×3024, about 9.1 MP, and every remaining pixel is the same as before.

Two things can make it look worse. Saving as JPG or WebP compresses the image again, though quality 90 hides that well. And if you crop a small area and scale it up, the browser has to invent pixels, so the picture goes soft.

What aspect ratio should I crop to?

Aspect ratio is the shape of the picture, written as width to height. Pick it based on where the image will be shown, then crop. These are common targets:

  • 1:1 square: profile pictures, product listings, Instagram grid posts
  • 4:5 portrait (1080×1350): the tallest feed post Instagram shows without cutting
  • 9:16 vertical (1080×1920): Stories, Reels, TikTok and phone wallpapers
  • 16:9 wide (1280×720 or 1920×1080): YouTube thumbnails, slides and video frames
  • 3:2: the native shape of most DSLR and mirrorless cameras, and 6×4 inch prints

How do I straighten a crooked photo?

Turn on the rule-of-thirds grid and move the Straighten slider until a line that should be level, such as a horizon or a table edge, runs parallel to the grid. The sample photo opens tilted by 4°, so try +4° on it.

Rotating a rectangle leaves four empty triangles at the corners. Zoom to hide empty corners enlarges the picture just enough to cover them. A 5° fix on a 3:2 photo needs about 13% more, so you lose a little at the edges. Untick it to keep every pixel; the corners then turn transparent in PNG or white in JPG.

How do I crop an image to an exact size in pixels?

There are two ways, and you can combine them. To cut an exact area, type the X and Y position and the width and height of the box. The boxes update as you drag, so you can drag roughly and then fix the numbers.

To get an exact output size, lock the ratio first, for example 16:9, then tick Resize the output and enter the width, such as 1280. The height follows from the ratio, so you end up with exactly 1280×720 whatever the size of the box.

Tips

  • Click inside the crop box and use the arrow keys for fine adjustments. That is far easier than hitting a handle precisely on a phone.
  • After cropping, the image compressor can shrink the file further for email or a website.
  • Cropping many photos to the same shape? The batch image editor can fill an exact size for a whole folder at once, trimming the edges around the center.
  • A square crop of your logo makes a good starting point to build a favicon set for your site.
  • Phone photos can carry your GPS location. Re-encoding here drops that metadata, and the EXIF viewer shows what an original file contains.

Questions

How do I crop a picture into a circle?

Tick Circle crop, then size the box over the area you want. A square box gives a circle and a rectangle gives an oval. The corners are saved as transparent pixels, so JPG switches to PNG. WebP keeps transparency too.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

No, the pixels you keep stay the same. You only have fewer of them. Saving as JPG or WebP adds a little compression, which is hard to see at quality 90, and enlarging a small crop makes it look soft.

How do I crop a photo for Instagram?

Pick Instagram post for a 1080×1080 square or Instagram portrait for 1080×1350. Position the box and download. Both presets set the shape and the output size, so the file is ready to post.

Can I crop to an exact pixel size?

Yes. Type the width and height in the pixel boxes to cut that exact area. To get a set output size from any box, lock a ratio and tick Resize the output, then enter the width you need.

Why is my photo sideways after cropping on other sites?

Phones often store photos sideways with an orientation tag, and some tools ignore the tag. This cropper reads it and turns the photo upright before you see it, so the crop matches the screen.

Does cropping keep the photo's EXIF data?

No. The cropped file is a fresh image, so camera details and GPS location are not copied. That makes it safer to share, but keep the original if you need the metadata.

How do I put cropped photos into one document?

Crop and download each photo, then combine the cropped images into a PDF with A4 or Letter pages.
