Meme Generator
Add classic outlined meme text to any picture. No watermark. Runs in your browser.
About this meme generator
This meme generator puts bold captions on your own picture or on a blank layout, and saves the result as a PNG or JPG. It is for anyone who wants a quick reaction image for a group chat, a class slide or a social post, without an account or a watermark.
You get the classic look by default: white capital letters with a thick black outline, top and bottom. Add as many extra text boxes as you like, drag them anywhere, and the text shrinks to fit each box as you type.
Your picture never leaves your device. The meme is drawn on a canvas in your browser, at the full size of the photo you opened.
Features
Classic meme text that looks the same everywhere
Anton, a tall condensed display font, is bundled with the page, so your meme looks the same on phones that lack Impact.
Auto-fit for every box
Each box finds the largest font size that fits, wrapping words onto new lines. Turn it off for a fixed size.
Unlimited draggable text
Top and bottom text come ready. Add more boxes, drag them, resize them from the corner, or nudge them with the arrow keys.
Outline, color and alignment per box
Set text color, outline color and outline thickness, plus horizontal and vertical alignment.
Caption bar style
Add a white bar above the picture for the modern caption look, with adjustable height.
Blank layouts, no copyrighted templates
Start from a solid color, two stacked panels, a no/yes comparison, two side-by-side panels or a four-panel grid, each in colors you pick.
Full-size export and copy
Download PNG or JPG, or copy the image to the clipboard where the browser allows it.
How to use the meme generator
- 1Upload or paste a picture, or pick a blank layout.
- 2Type your top and bottom text. Add, drag or restyle boxes as needed.
- 3Download a PNG or JPG, or copy the image to the clipboard.
When to use it
Reaction images for chat
Paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V, type one line on top and one below, then press Copy image and paste it into the chat. It takes about ten seconds.
Class and meeting slides
A two-panel layout with your own captions makes a point stick, with no template hunting.
Social media posts
The stacked and grid layouts are 1080×1080, the size most feeds show as a square. The side-by-side layout is 1600×900, a 16:9 frame that also suits link previews.
What font do memes use?
The classic meme font is Impact. Geoffrey Lee designed it in 1965 for the Stephenson Blake type foundry. Windows and macOS ship it, and early image macros used it in white capitals with a black outline, which became the standard look.
The catch is that Impact is not on every device. Open a meme maker on many Android phones or a Linux laptop and Impact quietly turns into a plain fallback font. This tool bundles Anton, which has the same tall, heavy, condensed feel and is free under the SIL Open Font License. Impact, Arial bold and Comic Sans are still in the font list if you want them.
How do I make text readable on any picture?
Use high contrast and an outline. White letters with a black outline stay readable on a bright sky and on a dark room alike, because one of the two colors always stands out.
The outline here is measured as a share of the letter size, so it scales with the text. The default of 16% gives an edge about one twelfth of the letter height. Lower it to 8% for a thinner, cleaner look, or set it to none for dark text on a white caption bar.
- Keep each caption short. Two lines of five words beat a paragraph.
- Put text over calm areas such as sky or walls, not over faces.
- Leave a margin, since some apps crop the corners of previews.
Classic memes vs caption memes
A classic meme, also called an image macro, puts outlined text right on the picture: a setup line at the top and a punchline at the bottom. A caption meme puts plain dark text on a white strip above the picture, so nothing in the image is covered.
Tick Caption bar to switch. Other boxes stay over the same spot in the picture, so you can mix both styles.
Can I use any picture in a meme?
Your own photos are fine. With someone else's picture, the copyright still belongs to whoever took it. Memes are often treated as commentary or parody, but the rules differ by country, and advertising is stricter.
That is why this tool ships blank layouts instead of famous meme pictures. For anything commercial, use photos you own or have a license for.

Tips
- Press Enter on a selected box to jump to its text field, and Delete to remove it.
- Hold Shift with the arrow keys for steps of 5% instead of 1%, and Alt to resize the box instead of moving it.
- Only want part of a photo? Crop the picture first, then open the cropped file here.
- PNG keeps text edges sharp. JPG at quality 85 to 90 gives a much smaller file for big photos, and you can shrink the file further before posting.
- Phone photos can carry your GPS location. Check and remove photo location data before you share the original anywhere.
Questions
How do I make a meme with my own picture?
Drop, browse or paste your picture into the upload area. Type your top and bottom text, adjust the boxes if needed, then download a PNG or JPG or copy the image.
What font is used for memes?
The classic meme font is Impact in white capitals with a black outline. This tool also bundles Anton, a free lookalike, so the style shows correctly on phones and computers that don't have Impact installed.
Does this meme generator add a watermark?
No. What you see in the preview, minus the dashed box outlines, is exactly what you download.
How do I add more text boxes?
Press Add text box. A new box appears in the middle, and you can drag it, resize it and style it on its own.
Why does my text get smaller as I type?
Auto-fit is on. It keeps the text inside the box by shrinking it and wrapping lines. Make the box bigger, or turn off auto-fit and set a fixed size if you prefer.
Can I copy the meme to the clipboard?
Yes, in browsers that allow copying images, which includes current Chrome, Edge and Safari. Press Copy image and paste it into a chat or document. If the button is missing, use Download.
What size will my meme be?
It matches your picture's pixel size, shown under the preview. A caption bar adds height on top. Very large pictures above about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to stay inside browser limits. To hit an exact post size afterwards, resize the finished meme.
Can I write in other languages or use emoji?
Yes. Characters the chosen font lacks, such as Bangla or emoji, are drawn with a font from your system instead.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The meme is drawn in your browser and saved straight to your device.
