QR Code & Barcode Scanner
Scan QR codes and barcodes with your camera or an image. Runs in your browser.
About this qr code & barcode scanner
This QR code and barcode scanner reads codes from your webcam or phone camera, from photos, and from pasted screenshots, right in the browser. Use it on a laptop with no phone handy, or to read a code someone sent you as an image.
It decodes QR codes, Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417 and common barcodes such as EAN-13, UPC-A and Code 128. Then it tells you what the content is: a web link, Wi-Fi login, contact card, calendar event, 2FA setup, product code or plain text, with the useful fields pulled out.
Links are never opened for you. You see the full address and the real domain first, plus warnings for things like look-alike domains and link shorteners. Camera video and images are processed on your device and never uploaded.
Features
Camera scanning with controls
Start and stop the camera, switch between front and back cameras, and turn on the flashlight where the browser allows it. The camera turns off when you stop, switch tabs or leave the page.
Images, screenshots and batches
Drop in several photos at once or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. Large photos are tried at three sizes, which helps with small codes in big pictures.
Typed results
Wi-Fi codes show the network, security and password with a copy button. Contact cards list name, phone and email. EAN and UPC codes get a check-digit test.
Safe link handling
A link is shown as text with its domain. It only opens if you click Open, and then in a new tab with no referrer. Warnings flag http, punycode, raw IP addresses, @ tricks and shorteners.
History you can export
Each scan is listed with its type, format, source and time. Copy all results, download them as CSV, or clear the list. It lives only in this tab.
Native detector when available
Browsers that ship the BarcodeDetector API use it for speed. Others use the open-source ZXing decoder, loaded only when you need it.
How to use the qr code & barcode scanner
- 1Choose Camera and press Start camera, or switch to Image and add a photo or screenshot.
- 2Hold the code inside the frame. It is read on your device in a moment.
- 3Copy the result. Links are shown as text and open only if you click them.
When to use it
Join Wi-Fi from a laptop
Point the webcam at the router sticker or café sign, then copy the password from the result.
Read a QR code in an email or PDF
Take a screenshot and paste it here. No second device needed.
Check a link before you visit
Scan a code from a poster or parking meter and read the real domain before deciding to open it.
How do I scan a QR code on a laptop?
Choose Camera and press Start camera. Your browser asks for permission once. Hold the code inside the yellow frame, about 15 to 30 cm from the webcam, and keep it still for a moment. When a code is read, the result appears on the right and the camera stops, unless you ticked Keep scanning.
If permission was blocked, click the camera icon in the address bar and allow it. The camera only works on https pages, and only one app can use it at a time, so close video calls first.
How do I scan a QR code from a picture or screenshot?
Switch to Image or screenshot, then choose files, drag them in, or press Ctrl+V after taking a screenshot. Each image gets a found or none-found label.
If nothing is found, crop closer to the code and keep the quiet zone, the white margin around it. Blurry, very dark or heavily angled photos are the usual problem. Built-in browser detectors can also find several codes in one image.
What can a QR code contain?
A QR code (ISO/IEC 18004) holds up to 4,296 letters and digits, or 2,953 bytes of any data. Apps agree on a few text formats so they know what to do with it. This scanner recognizes these:
- Web links starting with http:// or https://.
- Wi-Fi: WIFI:T:WPA;S:network;P:password;; with backslash escapes for special characters.
- Contacts as vCard (BEGIN:VCARD) or MeCard (MECARD:).
- Email (mailto:), phone (tel:), text message (SMSTO:) and location (geo:).
- Calendar events (BEGIN:VEVENT) and 2FA setup links (otpauth://).
- Retail barcodes: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ISBN, checked with the GS1 check digit.
Are QR codes safe to scan?
Scanning is harmless. Opening is where the risk is. Fake QR stickers on parking meters and posters, sometimes called quishing, send people to look-alike payment pages. That is why this tool shows the domain and never opens a link on its own.
Watch for a domain that is close to a real brand but not quite right, an @ sign before the domain, and shortened links that hide where they go. If a link has encoded characters you can't read, decode the URL first. And treat otpauth codes like passwords: anyone who sees one can generate your 2FA codes.
Why use Mavros
| Mavros | Typical upload sites | |
|---|---|---|
| Where decoding happens | On your device; video and images stay local | Images often uploaded |

| Input | Camera, files, drag and drop, pasted screenshots | One upload at a time |
| Result types | Wi-Fi, contacts, events, OTP, EAN parsed into fields | Raw text only |
| Camera controls | Camera picker, flashlight, start and stop | Single default camera |
| History | Copy all or download CSV | Last result only |
Tips
- Good light matters more than resolution. Turn on the flashlight for codes on dark packaging.
- Barcodes read best held horizontally and filling most of the frame width.
- Want to share a link or Wi-Fi login the other way? Make your own QR code, or create retail and shipping labels with the barcode generator.
- Browse more generator tools for codes, IDs and passwords.
Questions
How do I scan a QR code from a screenshot?
Switch to Image or screenshot and press Ctrl+V right after taking the screenshot, or choose the saved file. The decoded text appears in the results list.
Why won't my camera start?
Usually permission was blocked, another app is using the camera, or the page isn't on https. Allow the camera from the address bar, close video calls, and press Start camera again.
Is my camera video uploaded?
No. Frames are read in your browser and thrown away straight after decoding. The camera is released when you press Stop, switch tabs or close the page.
Can it read barcodes as well as QR codes?
Yes. It reads EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Codabar, ITF, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417. Barcodes scan best from photos or a steady camera.
How do I get the Wi-Fi password from a QR code?
Scan the code and the result card shows the network name, security type and password. Press Copy Wi-Fi password and paste it into your device's Wi-Fi settings.
Why doesn't the scanner open links automatically?
Because malicious QR codes are a common phishing trick. You see the full address and domain first, then choose whether to open it. Opened links use a new tab with no referrer.
Can it scan several QR codes in one image?
In browsers with the built-in BarcodeDetector, yes, every code in the image is listed. Elsewhere it reads one code per image, so crop each code or add several images at once.
