Barcode Generator
EAN, UPC, Code 128 and more as PNG or SVG, single or bulk. Runs in your browser.
About this barcode generator
This barcode generator draws scannable barcodes in 10 formats, including EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 128 and ITF-14, and lets you download them as PNG or SVG. It fills in or checks the check digit for you, and it can turn a list of up to 1,000 values into a ZIP of separate image files.
Pick a format and type the number. The barcode appears as you type, with a status line saying whether the check digit was added, is correct or is wrong, and what it should be. That matters: one wrong digit makes an EAN-13 fail at a checkout.
Everything is drawn in your browser. Your product numbers aren't uploaded, there is no account, and SVG and bulk export are not locked behind a plan.
Features
Ten formats
Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 39, ITF-14, MSI Plessey, Pharmacode and Codabar. Each format shows a sample value, what input it accepts and where it is typically used.
Check digits you can trust
Type 12 digits for EAN-13 and the 13th is calculated. Type all 13 and it is verified. If it is wrong, you see the correct digit instead of a silent fix. UPC-E also shows its expanded UPC-A number.
Size, text and colors
Set bar width from 1 to 5 px, height up to 200 px and the quiet zone. Show or hide the human-readable text, move it above or below, and change font and size. Pick bar and background colors or a transparent background.
PNG and SVG downloads
PNG files render at 1x to 6x scale for sharp prints. SVG files are vectors, so they stay crisp at any size in design tools and label software.
Bulk generation to ZIP
Paste up to 1,000 values, one per line. Valid ones become numbered PNG or SVG files in a ZIP, along with barcodes.csv listing each input, the full encoded number and its status. Invalid lines are listed with the reason.
Optional check characters
Add a Mod 43 check character to Code 39, and choose Mod 10, Mod 11 or a double check digit for MSI Plessey, matching what your scanner expects.
How to use the barcode generator
- 1Choose a format such as EAN-13 or Code 128.
- 2Enter a value, or switch to Bulk and paste a list.
- 3Adjust size, text and colors, then download PNG, SVG or a ZIP.
When to use it
Product packaging
Turn the GTINs you licensed from GS1 into EAN-13 or UPC-A artwork for labels and boxes, then place the SVG in your packaging design.
Inventory and asset tags
Make Code 128 labels for equipment, bins and shelves. Code 128 holds letters and digits, so values like WH2-A14-003 work.
Shipping cartons
ITF-14 encodes the 14-digit GTIN of an outer case and prints well on corrugated board.
Which barcode format should you use?
Use the format your scanner, retailer or partner asks for. If no one asks, these rules cover most cases:
- Retail products sold in shops: EAN-13 worldwide, UPC-A in the US and Canada. Both need a number from GS1.
- Very small retail packs: EAN-8 or UPC-E, which are shorter versions of the same system.
- Internal labels with letters and numbers: Code 128, defined in ISO/IEC 15417. It is compact and encodes all 128 ASCII characters.
- Older industrial or ID badge systems: Code 39, defined in ISO/IEC 16388. Uppercase letters, digits and a few symbols only.
- Cartons and cases: ITF-14 for the 14-digit GTIN.
- Pharmaceutical packaging control: Pharmacode, a number from 3 to 131070. It has no check digit and is read by special scanners.
How is an EAN-13 or UPC check digit calculated?
EAN, UPC and ITF-14 use the GS1 mod-10 check digit. Starting from the rightmost digit of the number without its check digit, multiply the digits by 3, 1, 3, 1 and so on, add the results, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10.
Take 590123412345. From the right: 5×3, 4×1, 3×3, 2×1, 1×3, 4×1, 3×3, 2×1, 1×3, 0×1, 9×3 and 5×1. That gives 15 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 3 + 0 + 27 + 5 = 83. The next multiple of 10 is 90, so the check digit is 7 and the full EAN-13 is 5901234123457. The generator does this as you type.
Do you need to buy barcodes from GS1?
For retail products, yes. The image is free to draw, but the number inside it must be a GTIN licensed to your company by GS1, the standards body that runs EAN and UPC numbering. Big retailers and marketplaces check numbers against the GS1 database, and made-up or resold numbers can get listings removed.
This tool draws the barcode for a number you already have. It does not issue or register numbers. For internal labels with Code 128 or Code 39 you need nothing from GS1, since the codes never leave your own systems.
How do you make a barcode scan reliably?
Keep dark bars on a light background, because scanners read contrast and many can't read light bars on dark. Leave the quiet zone clear on both sides; for EAN-13 that is at least 11 bar widths on the left and 7 on the right. Print at 100% scale or larger. EAN-13 is specified at magnifications from 80% to 200% of its nominal 37.29 mm width, and shrinking it below that is the most common cause of failed scans.
Use SVG for print work, or a PNG at 3x or more, and scan a test print before a big run.
Why use Mavros
| Mavros | Typical upload sites | |
|---|---|---|
| SVG download | Free | Often paid or account only |
| Bulk generation | Up to 1,000 per batch, one file each, plus a CSV log | 10 to 100 values, or one combined image |
| Wrong check digit | Flagged with the correct digit | Silently replaced or not checked |
| Commercial use | Allowed | Sometimes non-commercial only or attribution required |
| Your product numbers | Stay in your browser | Sent to a server to render |
Tips
- Paste the values from a spreadsheet column straight into Bulk mode. Each row becomes one file, numbered in the same order.
- Check a printed code with the barcode and QR scanner on your phone or laptop camera before printing hundreds.
- Need a 2D code for a URL or Wi-Fi details instead? Use the QR code generator.
- To send codes to a printer as one document, download PNGs and combine them into a PDF.
- Put product barcodes on your invoices or packing slips so warehouse staff can scan line items.
Questions
Is this barcode generator free for commercial use?
Yes. You can use the barcodes on products, labels and documents you sell, with no attribution. For retail EAN or UPC codes, the number itself must still be licensed from GS1.
Can I make a UPC or EAN barcode without GS1?
You can draw one, but retailers and marketplaces expect a GS1-licensed number and may reject others. For internal use, such as stock labels, use Code 128 instead, which needs no registration.
What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?
UPC-A has 12 digits and is used mainly in the US and Canada. EAN-13 has 13 digits and is used everywhere else. A UPC-A number becomes an EAN-13 by adding a leading 0, and modern scanners read both.
Why does my barcode show as invalid?
Usually the length or the check digit is wrong. The message under the input says which: for example, EAN-13 needs 12 or 13 digits, and a wrong last digit is reported with the correct one.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
Choose SVG for print and design software because it stays sharp at any size. Choose PNG for documents, websites and label apps that need an image, and use a 3x scale or higher for printing.
How many barcodes can I generate at once?
Up to 1,000 per batch in Bulk mode. They download as one ZIP with a file per code and a CSV log. For longer lists, split them into batches of 1,000.
What can Code 128 encode?
Any of the 128 ASCII characters: upper and lower case letters, digits, punctuation and control codes. Accented letters and emoji aren't ASCII, so the tool flags them.
What size should a printed barcode be?
For EAN-13, about 37 mm wide by 26 mm tall at 100% magnification, and never below 80%. For Code 128, leave a clear margin of at least 10 bar widths on each side, and test-print at the size you plan to use.
