Webcam Test
Check your camera, its real resolution and frame rate. Runs in your browser.
About this webcam test
This webcam test checks that your camera works and shows what it really delivers: the resolution, the frame rate measured from live frames, and the full list of settings the camera supports. It is for anyone about to join a call, an interview or an online exam, and for people checking a new or second-hand webcam.
Nothing leaves your device. The video goes from the camera to this browser tab and nowhere else. When you press Stop camera, every track is released and your camera light goes off.
Most camera checkers stop at a preview. This one also tells you when the camera gives you less than you asked for, which is the usual reason a "1080p" webcam looks soft on calls.
Features
Camera picker
Choose between a laptop camera, a USB webcam, a phone used as a webcam or a virtual camera. Switching cameras restarts the preview right away.
Ask for a resolution and frame rate
Request 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K or the highest the camera offers, at 30 or 60 fps. The camera answers with the closest mode it supports, and the page shows what you actually got.
Measured frames per second
The fps figure counts real frames as they arrive, not the number the driver reports. You see both side by side, so a camera that drops frames in dim light shows up immediately.
Settings and capabilities tables
One table lists the live track settings: width, height, frame rate, facing mode and more. The other lists the ranges the camera supports, such as zoom, exposure, focus and white balance, where the browser reports them.
Mirror toggle
Flip the preview like a mirror, the way most video-call apps show you, or turn it off to see what other people see.
Photo and short clip
Save a full-resolution PNG snapshot, or record 5, 10 or 30 seconds of video with the browser's built-in recorder. Play it back on the page and download it if you want to keep it.
How to use the webcam test
- 1Pick your camera and the resolution to ask for, then press Start camera and allow access.
- 2Check the live preview, measured fps, resolution and the capabilities table.
- 3Take a photo or record a short clip to check quality, then stop the camera.
When to use it
Before a meeting or interview
Check framing and lighting two minutes before the call. If the measured fps drops below 20, add light in front of you rather than behind.
Checking a new or used webcam
Confirm the box claims. Ask for 1080p at 30 fps and see whether the camera really delivers it on your computer.
Fixing "camera not found" errors
The error panel names the exact problem, such as blocked permission, another app using the camera, or no device at all, and gives steps for your browser and system.
Testing your whole setup
Pair this with the microphone test and the left and right speaker test so your camera, mic and audio are all ready before you go live.
How do I test my webcam online?
Pick your camera in the list and press Start camera. Your browser asks for permission once; choose Allow. The preview appears within a second or two, and the stats tiles fill in.
Look at three numbers. Resolution should match what you asked for. Measured fps should sit close to 30 (or 60 if you asked for it). The aspect ratio should be 16:9 for most modern webcams. If all three look right and the picture is clear, your camera is fine.
Why is my webcam resolution lower than advertised?
A camera can only send what its connection, driver and browser agree on. A few common causes:
- The browser asks for 640 × 480 by default. Choose 1080p in the list to ask for more.
- A USB 2.0 port or hub can limit bandwidth when several devices share it. Plug the camera straight into the computer.
- Another app may have the camera locked to a lower mode. Close video-call apps and start again.
- Some "1080p" webcams only reach full resolution at lower frame rates, or upscale a smaller sensor image.
Why is my webcam frame rate low?
Dim light is the most common reason. Many webcams lengthen each exposure when the room is dark, which drops 30 fps to 15 fps or less. Turn on a lamp facing you and watch the measured fps climb.
Busy USB hubs, older laptops under heavy load, and virtual-background filters in other apps can also cut the frame rate. The driver-reported number often stays at 30 while the measured one falls, which is why this page shows both.
What does the capabilities table tell me?
It lists the ranges the camera says it supports, as reported by the browser's media API. You might see a width range of 160 to 1920, a frame rate range of 1 to 30, and modes such as continuous focus or manual exposure.
Chrome and Edge report the most detail. Firefox and Safari report less or nothing at all, which is a browser limit, not a camera fault.
Why use Mavros
| Mavros | Typical upload sites | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the video goes | Stays in your browser tab | Often unclear, some upload snapshots |
| Frame rate | Measured from live frames, plus driver value | Driver value only |
| Request a resolution | 480p to 4K or the camera's maximum | Default size only |
| Capabilities list | Full table where the browser supports it | Resolution only |
| Error help | Named cause and steps for your browser and system | Generic "allow camera" message |
| Snapshot and clip | PNG photo and 5 to 30 s recording | Photo only, or none |
| Sign-up or ads before testing | None | Sometimes |
Tips
- Put your main light in front of you, not behind. A bright window behind you turns your face into a silhouette and makes the camera lower its frame rate.
- Mirror mode only changes your preview. Other people on a call usually see the unmirrored image, so text on a T-shirt reads normally to them.
- Want to share a snapshot? Shrink the PNG before you email it, or crop it to a profile photo.
- Recording yourself for a tutorial? The screen recorder can add a webcam bubble to a screen capture.
Questions
Is this webcam test private?
Yes. The video stays inside this browser tab and is never uploaded. Photos and clips exist only in memory until you download them or close the page.
Why does it say my camera is in use by another app?
Another program holds the camera. On Windows most webcams work with one app at a time. Fully close Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS or the Camera app, including from the system tray, then press Start camera again.
How do I allow camera access in my browser?
Click the icon at the left of the address bar and set Camera to Allow, then reload. On Windows also check Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. On a Mac, check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and switch your browser on.
What resolution should a webcam have for video calls?
720p at 30 fps is enough for most calls. Many call apps send 720p or less anyway to save bandwidth. 1080p helps for recordings and streaming, where the full image is kept.
Why is the measured fps different from the driver fps?
The driver number is what the camera was set to. The measured number counts frames that actually arrived in the last few seconds. Low light, busy USB ports and heavy CPU load make the real number lower.
Does the webcam test work on a phone?
Yes. Current mobile Chrome and Safari can open the front and back cameras. Pick the camera in the list after you allow access. The capabilities table may be shorter on mobile browsers.
Is the snapshot mirrored?
It matches the preview. With Mirror on, the photo is flipped like a mirror. Turn Mirror off before you take the photo if you want text to read the right way.
Why is the capabilities table empty?
Your browser doesn't report camera capabilities. Firefox and Safari share less detail than Chrome and Edge. The preview, resolution and measured fps still work.
