Unlock PDF: Remove PDF Password
Remove a PDF's password or print and copy restrictions. Runs in your browser.
About this unlock pdf: remove pdf password
This tool removes the password from a PDF when you know the password, and saves a copy that opens without one. It can also lift print, copy and edit restrictions from files that open freely. It's for people tired of typing the same password every time they open their own statement or report.
To be clear up front: it does not crack, guess or bypass passwords. If you don't know the password, this tool can't help, and neither can any honest one. The sections below explain why.
Everything happens in your browser using qpdf, a long-standing open-source PDF library compiled to WebAssembly. Your file and your password never leave your device.
Features
Removes the open password
Type the password once. The tool decrypts the file and saves a normal PDF that opens anywhere without a prompt.
Lifts print and copy restrictions
Some PDFs open without a password but block printing, copying or editing. If the file opens freely, those restrictions can be removed with one click.
Shows what the protection is
Before you do anything, you see the encryption method, such as AES-256 or RC4 128-bit, and which actions are blocked.
Checks the result
The new copy is reopened and checked to confirm it has no encryption left before you download it.
Your original stays as it was
You get a new copy with -unlocked added to the file name. The protected original isn't changed.
How to use the unlock pdf: remove pdf password
- 1Choose a protected PDF. A locked sample is loaded to try.
- 2Type the password, or remove restrictions if it opens without one.
- 3Download the unlocked copy. Your original stays unchanged.
When to use it
Monthly statements
Banks, mobile operators and payroll systems often email PDFs protected with a password based on your details. Remove it once so the file opens instantly from your archive.
Before editing or merging
Most editing tools refuse encrypted files. Remove the password, then merge the statements into one file or compress the PDF for upload.
Printing a restricted file you own
A form or report you made, exported with printing blocked, can be made printable again.
Making a scan searchable
OCR needs an editable file. Remove the password first, then add a searchable text layer.
Can you remove a PDF password without knowing it?
Not if it's an open password, the kind you're asked for before you see anything. With modern AES encryption, the password is the key that decrypts the content. Without it, the bytes are scrambled, and there's no shortcut around that.
The only way in would be guessing, also called brute force. We don't offer that, for two reasons. First, it's often not your file to break into: the password is the owner's way of saying no. Second, it doesn't work well enough to be honest about. A random 10-character password has more combinations than a browser could try in many lifetimes, and sites that claim otherwise only succeed on very weak or very old (40-bit RC4) protection.
If you forgot your own password, look for the message the file came with. Banks and employers usually explain the pattern, such as part of your date of birth plus account digits. Otherwise ask the sender for a new copy.
Why restrictions can be removed without a password
A PDF with only an owner password (shown in some apps as Secured, or with print and copy greyed out) has an empty open password. Every reader can decrypt it, otherwise you couldn't view it. The no-print and no-copy rules are flags the reader app chooses to obey.
Because the file can already be decrypted, removing those flags is a simple rewrite. That's also why restrictions aren't real security. Only remove them from files you own or have permission to change, such as your own exports or documents where the publisher allows it.
What changes when the password is removed?
The pages, text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields stay the same. Only the encryption and the permission flags are removed, so the file may be a few bytes smaller.
One exception: digital signatures. A signature covers the exact bytes of the signed file, so rewriting it marks the signature as changed. Keep the original if the signature matters, for example for a tax or legal filing.
Files this tool can't open
Some protection isn't password-based at all:
- Certificate (public-key) encryption, where the file opens only with a specific digital ID.
- DRM plug-ins used by some publishers and e-book stores.
- Files that are damaged, or that aren't really PDFs despite the name.
Why use Mavros
| Mavros | Typical upload sites | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the file and password go | Stay in your browser | Uploaded to a server |
| Needs the password | Yes, always, for open passwords | Yes, though some imply they can crack it |
| Shows the encryption type | Yes, with the list of restrictions | Rarely |
| Restriction-only files | Removed in one click | Removed, often without explanation |
| Limits | None | Daily task or file size caps |
Tips
- Check the Caps Lock key and the keyboard language. Passwords are case-sensitive, and a Bengali keyboard layout types different characters.
- Remove the password from a copy you keep on your own device, not from a file you're about to share.
- Need it protected again with your own password? Use Protect PDF with AES-256.
- If the file opens fine but can't be printed, look at the Protection panel. It lists exactly which actions are blocked.
Questions
Can I remove a password from a PDF if I forgot it?
No. This tool needs the correct password and never guesses or cracks one. Look for the original message for a hint, or ask the sender for an unprotected copy.
Is it safe to remove a PDF password online?
With this tool, yes, because nothing is uploaded. Decryption happens in your browser, so the document and the password stay on your device.
Is it legal to remove a password from a PDF?
It is when the file is yours or you have permission, for example your own bank statement or a document you created. Removing protection from someone else's file without permission may break the law or a contract where you live.
Why does my PDF open but not print?
It has owner restrictions. The file is encrypted with an empty open password and flags that block printing. If you're entitled to print it, this tool can remove those flags without a password.
Does removing the password change the content?
No. The pages, text and images stay the same. Only the encryption and permission flags go. Digital signatures will show as modified, so keep the signed original.
Which encryption types are supported?
All standard password security: RC4 40-bit and 128-bit, AES-128 and AES-256. Certificate-based encryption and publisher DRM aren't supported.
My password is correct but it says it's wrong. Why?
Check Caps Lock, the keyboard language and any spaces copied by accident. Some senders' passwords use a date format like DDMMYYYY; try the format their message describes.
Can I put a password back on later?
Yes. Open the unprotected copy in Protect PDF, choose a new password and download it encrypted with AES-256.
