About this add page numbers & watermark to pdf

This tool adds page numbers, a text watermark or an image watermark to a PDF, or all of them at once. Set the position, size, color, opacity and angle, check the live preview, and download the stamped file.

Numbers can read "1", "Page 1", "Page 1 of 12", "1 / 12" or your own text, and you can skip a cover page. Watermarks can sit in one spot or repeat across the whole page as a diagonal pattern.

Your PDF is processed in your browser and never uploaded. There's no account, no daily limit, and no extra branding added to your file.

Features

  • Live preview

The preview redraws as you type or move a slider. Use the page arrows to check any page, including the ones you excluded.

  • Page numbers your way

Six positions, five ready formats plus custom text with {n} and {total}, a start number, font, size, color and margin. Mirror mode swaps left and right on even pages for printed books.

  • Text or image watermark

Type any text or pick a preset like CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT. Or upload a logo; PNG files keep their transparency.

  • Placed or tiled

Put the watermark in one of nine positions with a margin, or tile it across the page in a staggered pattern with adjustable spacing.

  • Exact control

Opacity from 5 to 100%, rotation from -90 to 90 degrees, and size in points. No fixed presets you have to settle for.

  • Pick the pages

Numbers and watermark each take their own page range, like 2- or 1-3, 7. Leave it empty to cover every page.

When to use it

  • Numbering a report or thesis

Skip the title page with the range 2-, start at 1, and use "Page 1 of N" at the bottom center. Many universities ask for exactly this.

  • Marking drafts and confidential files

A light diagonal CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT across every page makes it obvious the document isn't final or isn't for sharing.

  • Branding proposals and proofs

Add your logo at 20 to 30% opacity in a corner of each page before sending a proposal, a portfolio or a design proof.

  • Court and tender bundles

First combine the documents into one PDF, then number every page so everyone can refer to the same page.

How do I add "Page 1 of N" to a PDF?

Turn on page numbers and pick the Page 1 of N format. N is filled in for you from the pages you number, so it's always right.

If you skip pages, the count follows the pages that get numbers. Numbering a 10-page file from page 2 with a start of 1 gives "Page 1 of 9" on page 2 and "Page 9 of 9" on the last page. Prefer to keep the real page positions? Leave the range empty and set the start to 1.

What opacity and size work best for a watermark?

For a text watermark across the middle of the page, 15 to 30% opacity keeps the content readable while the mark stays obvious. A size of 50 to 80 pt at 45 degrees covers an A4 or Letter page well.

Tiled watermarks need less opacity, around 10 to 20%, because there are more of them. Logos in a corner look best at 20 to 40% width of the page or smaller.

Measurements are in points, the PDF unit. One point is 1/72 of an inch, so a 36 pt margin is half an inch.

Can a watermark be removed?

It's drawn into the page content, so it can't be switched off like a comment. Still, anyone with a PDF editor can delete text or images they can select. A watermark tells people a file is a draft or confidential. It doesn't lock it.

If you need a mark that's hard to strip, add the watermark, then convert the pages to images and turn those images back into a PDF. The text won't be selectable after that, so keep the original.

Tips

  • Check the preview on a landscape page too. Positions follow each page's shape, so corners stay corners.
  • Scanned pages that were rotated in the file still get numbers at the bottom as you see it.
  • Watermark text in Bengali, Arabic, Chinese or other scripts is added as a sharp image, because standard PDF fonts only cover Western European letters.
  • For a two-sided printed booklet, put numbers in the bottom right and tick Mirror, so they always sit on the outer edge.
  • If pages are out of order, reorder the pages first, then number them.

Questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?

Open the PDF, keep Add page numbers ticked, choose a position and format, and click Add page numbers. Download the new file. There's no sign-up or limit.

How do I start numbering on page 2?

Type 2- in Pages to number. Page 1 gets no number. Set Start at to 1 if page 2 should show 1, or to 2 if it should show its real position.

How do I add a watermark to a PDF?

Tick Add a watermark, type your text or upload an image, then set the opacity, angle and position. The preview shows the result before you save.

Can I use my logo as a watermark?

Yes. Switch the watermark to Image and choose a PNG or JPG. PNG keeps transparent areas, so it looks cleaner on top of text.

How do I watermark only some pages?

Type a range in the watermark's Pages box, such as 1 or 3-5, 9. Pages outside the range stay as they are.

Will the watermark cover my text?

It's drawn on top of the page, so use low opacity, around 15 to 30%. Your text stays readable through it.

Does adding numbers change the rest of the PDF?

No. Pages, text, links and images stay as they were. The numbers and watermark are added to the page content, nothing is redrawn.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The preview and the final file are made in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
