About this sign pdf

This tool lets you sign a PDF in your browser. Draw, type or upload your signature, place it on the page, add the date or your name, and download the signed file.

It's built for the common case: someone emails you a contract, lease or form, and you need to sign it and send it back. You don't need an account, and the document never leaves your device, which is the point when it's a contract or an ID form.

To be clear about what you get: this is a visual electronic signature, an image of your signature written onto the page. It isn't a certificate-based digital signature, which is a different technology explained below.

Features

  • Draw, type or upload

Draw with a mouse, finger or stylus on a smooth pad. Type your name in one of four handwriting styles. Or upload a photo of your signature on paper.

  • Clean up a photo

Remove white background makes the paper around an uploaded signature transparent, so it sits on the line like real ink.

  • Drag, resize, nudge

Drag the signature onto the line and pull the yellow corner to resize. With the keyboard, arrows move it, Shift moves faster, and plus or minus resize.

  • Date and text fields

Add today's date in long, medium, short or ISO 8601 format (2026-10-30), plus any text like your printed name, initials or job title.

  • Every page in one click

Copy a signature or initials to all pages or a range such as 1-5, for documents that need initials on each page.

  • Flattened output

Signatures and text are written into the page content, so they look the same in every reader. You can also flatten filled-in form fields so the answers can't be edited.

How to use the sign pdf

  1. 1Choose the PDF you need to sign.
  2. 2Draw, type or upload your signature, then add it, plus a date or text if needed.
  3. 3Drag and resize everything into place, then save and download.

When to use it

  • Leases and rental forms

Sign and date the last page, initial every page with Copy to all pages, and send it back the same day.

  • Freelance contracts and NDAs

Sign a client's agreement without printing and scanning. Then merge it with your proposal if they want one file.

  • School and HR forms

Permission slips, onboarding forms and expense claims usually just need a signature and a date on a line.

  • Signing your own invoices

Some clients want a signed invoice. Make one with the free invoice generator, then sign it here.

Is an electronic signature legally binding?

In many places, yes, for most everyday documents. In the United States, the ESIGN Act (2000) and the UETA give electronic signatures the same standing as handwritten ones for most contracts. In the European Union, eIDAS defines a "simple electronic signature" that courts must not reject just because it's electronic.

There are exceptions. Wills, some property deeds, court documents and certain government forms may need a wet signature, a witness or a qualified signature. If the document is important, check what the other party or your local law requires. This page isn't legal advice.

What's the difference between an electronic and a digital signature?

An electronic signature is any sign that you agreed, such as a drawn or typed signature placed on the document. That's what this tool makes.

A digital signature is a cryptographic seal made with a certificate tied to your identity. A PDF reader can check it and show whether the file changed after signing. It usually needs a certificate from a trust provider, and in the EU the strongest form is a qualified electronic signature under eIDAS.

If someone asks for a "digitally signed PDF" with a certificate, this tool isn't the right one. If they ask you to "sign and send it back", it is.

Is it safe to sign a PDF online?

Most online signing sites upload your document to their servers. Here, the PDF is opened and saved inside your browser, and your signature image is made on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab clears everything.

Keep the signed file safe like any signed paper. Someone could copy a signature image from a PDF, so only send signed documents to people you trust.

Tips

  • Draw your signature bigger than you need, then shrink it on the page. It looks smoother that way.
  • For a photo of your signature, use black ink on plain white paper in good light, and crop close before uploading.
  • Pages that were scanned sideways can still be signed, but fix the page rotation first so the document reads properly.
  • If the form fields are already filled in, tick Flatten form fields so your answers can't be changed later.
  • Typed styles use fonts already on your device, so they differ between Windows, Mac and phones. The saved PDF keeps exactly what you see.

Questions

How do I sign a PDF for free?

Open the PDF here, draw or type your signature, click Add signature, then drag it onto the line. Save and download. It's free with no account or watermark.

Can I sign a PDF on my phone?

Yes. Draw your signature with your finger, then drag it into place on the page. It works in current mobile browsers on iPhone and Android.

Is this an electronic signature or a digital signature?

It's an electronic signature: an image of your signature placed on the page. It doesn't add a certificate-based digital signature that verifies identity or locks the file.

Is it legally binding?

Often, yes. Laws like ESIGN and UETA in the US and eIDAS in the EU accept electronic signatures for most contracts, with exceptions like wills. Check what your document requires.

How do I add the date next to my signature?

Pick a date and a format under Date and text, click Add date, and drag it beside your signature.

Can I initial every page?

Yes. Make your initials as a signature, add them to one page, then click Copy to all pages. You can also type a range like 1-4.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Your PDF and signature stay in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored after you close the page.

Can several people sign the same PDF?

Yes, one after another. Each person opens the file the last person signed, adds their signature, and saves. There's no automatic sending between signers.
